HELLO,
Many of you already know me and some of my background information. I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida where I attended and graduated from Hillsborough High School in 2005. After graduating from high school, I joined the U.S. Air Force in 2006, and while active duty, I was stationed in Central California from 2006-2010 and deployed to Balad AB, Iraq in 2008. In 2009, while pregnant with my older daughter, my husband and I decided I should not reenlist and instead be a stay at home mom and full time student.
I earned my Bachelors of Arts Degree in English in December 2014. I started my teaching career during the 2015-2016 school year at East Windsor Middle school as a 6th grade ELA Teacher. I decided to leave Windsor Prep after accepting a position at Northeast High School that began in January 2016. While a Northeast High School, I taught English 2 regular and honors to students ranging from 9th grade to 11th grade. During my time at Northeast High School, I prepared my 10th grade students for both the FSA Writing and Reading, which they had to pass in order to graduate when they are in 12th grade. These skills are helping me with my current 8th grade students because they will be taking the same tests in 2 years. I left Northeast because they had a loss of units (not enough students), which means loss of jobs for the newest teachers at the school. I have letters of recommendation from both the principal and assistant principal.
I then accepted a position at Plato Academy’s Largo Campus where I teach both 6th grade and 8th grade, as you know. I also teach speech and debate to the 8th grade students. I love working with my middle school students helping them by not only teaching them the Florida Standards, but by teaching them to make the right decisions.
I'm working toward going from a Florida Temporary Certificate to Professional by taking classes at SPC and taking the numerous test required by the state. I have 8 of the 15 credit hours complete, beginning another 3 on Jan. 9th, and will finish the remaining credits over the summer. I have taken the English 6-12 exam with a pass and I have taken the Reading, Essay, and Language portions of the General Knowledge with all passing. I need to retake the Math portion of the General Knowledge this semester, then the final test of Professional Educator. I plan to be completely done with the classes and test by the end of the summer. It’s a lot of work and time. I have until summer 2018 to finish everything, but I'm working hard to get it all done with plenty of time to spare for the state to process my paperwork.
I’m also currently working towards my ESOL and Reading Endorsements, both endorsements require 300 total hours, so 600 together. Below is my progress:
I have 120 hours of ESOL completed with another 60 hours beginning January 9th.
I’m in my first Reading course through Beacon, which I'm about to complete with another class starting January 9th through PCSB. I will be taking a 3rd Reading class when the one through PCSB is complete as long as finances allow it. Each class through Beacon is $300.
By the end of the school year, I will hopefully have 180 hours completed toward both endorsements.
